In this laboratory the following practical works and experiments is carried out.


Study of some medicinal plants of Bangladesh:

Study of morphological characteristics e.g. flowers, fruits, leaves, petals, stamens, etc.

Literature survey of medicinal plants according to family.

Drying and extraction techniques of plant samples.

Preparation of spray reagents for phytochemical study.

Study of some unorganised drugs:

a.   General tests for carbohydrates.

b.   Preparation and extraction of starches and related products.

c.   Examination of gums: Acacia, tragacanth, sterculia, agar and alginates.

Examination of fibers and surgical dressings.

General tests for carbohydrates e.g. glucose, fructose, lactose, sucrose, maltose, etc.

Examination of starch and related products.

Examinations of gums and mucilages.

Extraction and identification of some anthraquinone derivatives from Senna, Cascara sagrada, and Aloe.

Extraction & identificaiton of caffeine from tea and coffee.

Preparation of TLC plate, activation, sampling and screening of different plant extracts by thin-layer chromatography (TLC).

Study of cardiac glycosides and some cardio-active drugs: Digitalis, Squill, Strophanthus.

Examination of some saponin-containing drugs: Sarsaparilla, Discorea.

Study of alkaloids and some alkaloid-containing drugs: Belladonna, Stramonium, Hyoscyamus, Cinchona, Rauwolfia, Nux-vomica, Ergot, Ephedra, Colchicum.

Isolation of volatile oils from volatile oil-containing drugs.

Determination of protein content by Spectrophotometric method

Determination of extinction coefficient of protein.

Identification and molecular weight determination of protein by SDS-PAGE.

Identification of DNA by agarose gel electrophoresis.

Synthesis of DNA by PCR method.

Determination of lipid profiles.

Determination of serum creatinine level.Determination of blood urea level.

Determination of SGPT, SGOT levels in blood.
